Media Conventions

Slumdog millionaire:
At the start of the trailer there are 4 logos of well recognised companies, Fox, Warner brothers, film 4 and celadar films. This is then followed by a loud humming sound this attracts the attention of the viewer as from a moment of silence there is a sound of a woman humming and a purple screen showing awards the film has earned. There is then a screen showing a Roger Ebert a writer for the Chicago times views on the movie, “Danny Boyles ‘Slumdog millionaire’ is a triumph! “ . There is then the moments were the trailer reveals a person has beat high odds and won the game show. This promotes the movie as all the excellent reviews and showing well recognised companies in the beginning make people want to watch it as four big companies together in one film must mean the films good as companies such as fox can be related to many other movies and programs such as the Simpsons. There is also the theme song from the widely watched game show, who wants to be a millionaire. The main character is then shown in a series of dilemmas from in the beginning of the trailer the viewers know that there is a complication in how he won the show, And towards the end of the trailer a new character is introduced and it revealed that he went on the show not for the money but in the hope that this girl he once knew will see him and he can gain contact with her. The use of music in the background fuses the scenes in the trailer together as the fast tempo Indian music seems like it fits in with the surroundings shown in the trailer.

Trainspoting
In the beginning of the trailer there is a fast drumming beat which catches the viewer’s attention as it goes with the shot of the person running and also the fast changes of shots. There are also loads of loads sounds and talking. Also there is no mention of the actors or the directors till the end of the trailer were there are loads of flashing lights and names changing colours and flashing. Not having seen the film I cannot say whether the scenes shown in the trailer are shown in the movie.

In my opinion the Slumdog millionaire trailer is more effective as the attention grabbing music and also the mention of 4 world known movie companies has a attention grabbing effect as the audience would want to know how their new movie is if they’ve enjoyed a previous one.
